My Project
Learning in peace and an appropriate volume is essential for most learners. There is no question that times have changed. The ability for students to focus for a long period of time day-to-day has become more and more difficult. Also, the classrooms today are like a revolving door of groups or teachers coming in and out to support students. Tuning out distractions, staying on-task and working independently is a common challenge for many young learners.
Along with strategies to stay focused (self-talk, timers, self-evaluation), noise canceling headphones and aroma diffusers are some other popular aids to help students stay focused and on task.
I would love to provide my students with the option to use noise canceling headphones to help tune out distractions. With a limited supply, many students cannot use them when they would need them most. Last year students would request them when they had trouble tuning out small group conversations or other teachers exiting and entering the room. They are also great to share with the rest of the school during loud assemblies, which can get overstimulating for some students to the point that they do not want to watch. The headphones act as a buffer to reduce the loud noises in some assemblies, specifically when we have musicians visiting.
In addition to noise canceling headphones to increase calm and readiness for learning, diffusers have become a popular item. In a fourth-grade classroom there can be some strong smells during the hotter months, which is also a great time to have diffusers to disburse other smells.
