My Project
My amazing students learn in a self-contained, 12:1:1 (12 students: 1 teacher: 1 paraprofessional), 3rd-5th grade classroom. Because of the various intellectual disabilities of my students, we have several paraprofessionals in our room to provide the one to one support they require. My school is considered a high poverty school that serves children with disabilities in Brooklyn, New York. All of my students are unique in their own ways. They are such a wonderful group who deserve to have a comfortable and pleasant learning environment.
Our school is a wonderful place for students and staff, but the building is old and most of the classrooms are outfitted with old furniture like our current classroom mat.
My students need an area where they can go to self-regulate if something is not going their way. Having a new clean, bright colored mat in their classroom will have a positive impact on their school work because they can use it to calm down and come back to their desk invigorated and ready to learn.
