If you can't bring students into a research lab, then bring the research lab to the students - introducing the Zebra Fish Lab! I teach 10th-12th grade biology to students of all levels of academic abilities: general biology, honors biology and AP biology. The school is one of four high schools in a rapidly growing suburban town, which used to be a rural farming community only a decade ago.
Each year many students want to experience working in a real research lab. Working in a science research facility in high school gives students an advantage for entering research laboratories at the college level. The Zebra Fish Lab at our school will enable students to do actual research, while communicating with two local scientists, and gain experience. The school has a room available for the lab, but there isn't enough funding for the equipment needed.
With the fish breeding tanks and petri dishes, students will be able to establish a working lab, where they will raise Zebra fish from egg to adult, and look at various research questions. Students can investigate genetic inheritance patterns with selective breeding, along with studying behavioral and embryonic development differences under various conditions.
With your help, advanced biology students, AVID students (students identified for additional assistance in preparation for college) and any additional students who show a burning desire to enter into a science research career, will be working together in a hands-on, real research, situation. Your help will give students the extra experience needed for working in labs in college that will lead to a career in scientific research.
