Yucky, Yucky Science! Help me Motivate my 4th Graders!

My students need 2 Growing Bacteria Classroom Kits and 1 Owl Pellet Classroom Kit.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Greta Parton's classroom raised $186

This project is fully funded

Sometimes teachers wonder why their students dread class; educators put so much effort and thought into daily lessons, and it just seems unfair that our students are not as enthusiastic as we are. I've come to the conclusion that students don't really dread the lessons--it's the fact that they seem to be the same day after day (another worksheet??). It's hard to keep from getting into a "rut" especially when there are few resources available. My 4th graders willingly work and do their best when we work in our science textbook, but they really come to life when we do an exciting hands-on activity. Especially if it's kind of "yucky!"

Two activities which my students have asked about include growing bacteria and dissecting owl pellets. Some of the older students in our school have had the opportunity to learn from both of these activities, so my students are interested to see what they can learn for themselves. The "yuck" factor is just an added bonus for them! Also, these lessons will be especially helpful when we kick off our school wide science-fair in the spring. The majority of my students live in low-income households, and they are understandably limited as to the type of experiment they can do at home; most of them are very, very simple. So I want to bring these two cool activities to our classroom that will encourage and motivate them to love science.

Lakeshore Learning's kits for growing bacteria and dissecting owl pellets are geared toward younger students. There will be enough materials for each student to grow non-toxic bacteria, and students will pair up to dissect the owl pellets in a group activity. These are perfect activities for my students--I can't tell you how much they will love them! We'll take pictures in action as we're learning together, and you'll see for yourself what a difference you made! (I always make a ton of pictures during activities like this for my classroom newsletter so that my students' parents stay informed regarding what's happening in my classroom--they will be thrilled to see their children engaged in science!

Without your help, these hands-on learning opportunities simply won't happen. Our school simply "gets by." We have only the essentials. There's no science lab and no funds for activities like these. This would be considered a "luxury." Please help me give my kids a few science lessons that they'll remember--you won't regret it! Thanks for your consideration.
