Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A love for learning is what I wish most for my students. Teaching students with special needs makes it difficult to foster this love without multiple supports. My students are held to the same standards as their typical developing peers, yet they face daily obstacles to learning.
I teach 4th/5th grade students with multiple disabilities in a self-contained classroom.
Our school is located in a low-income area with a majority of second language learners. My students are greatly challenged when attempting to access grade level curriculum. Many struggle to retain concepts and therefore perform far below grade level. Sitting in standard classroom chairs and maintaining focus during teacher instruction is difficult without frequent breaks and movement opportunities. While they are eager to learn new things, they need additional supports to engage them in active listening.
My Project
I am requesting a movement station for transitions, 2 squishy cushions, and 3 chair balls to allow movement and help my students calm their bodies and engage their minds. These tools will keep them actively listening during instructional time and help them transition between groups. The movement station will be used to give students physical activity opportunities between groups, which will wake up their bodies and minds. These tools will allow my students to focus for longer periods of time and therefore become more active participants in class.
Providing daily access to the core curriculum for students with special needs requires creative thinking and the support of additional tools and modifications.
My students need opportunities to independently calm their bodies and focus their minds using resources that allow movement. Giving them seating choices that meet their individual needs allows them to focus for longer periods during instructional time and therefore participate actively in class discussions.
