My students need materials to help us set up a mini-post office in our school where students can write to other students and we can deliver the letters!
Kindergarten is a time for discovery and exploration. There is no better way to deeply understand a topic then to recreate the experience around you! Part of our Social Studies/Inquiry unit this year is to develop a deeper understanding of our community, specifically the post office.
The 19 students in my New York City Kindergarten class are all full of energy and eager to learn.
They come to school everyday with an open mind and creative spirit that needs to be fed. Many students have not been to preschool, so this has been their first school experience. Most students receive free lunch and have limited experiences outside their immediate surroundings.
My Project
As our discussion about the post office began, I realized many students were not able to relate to the topic because they have never been to one or remembered being there. Through story books, pictures off the computer and an upcoming class visit to the local post office they are getting more familiar with it. I decided one way to get a deeper understanding of the entire mail process would be to recreate it at our school. By having the necessary materials, we will be able to ask the rest of our school to write letters to other students (hence the envelope request), drop them in the mailboxes (also requested) and we will learn how to sort the mail and deliver it (which is where the costumes come in).
One of the best ways for young children to learn is through creativity and dramatic play.
This role-playing of the post office will help deepen their understanding of they system while also fostering a sense of importance and responsibility of having a job to deliver the mail. It also will help strengthen our writing skills as we also will be writing letters to friends in other classes.
