Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday journalists across the world are exposing important stories left out of mainstream media. Our students have the courage to join these crucial reporting efforts, however our school does not have funding to provide them with an essential reporting tool: a video camera.

Our students come from a variety of home-situations that force them to handle major responsibilities early on in life.

They grow up fast, which means they have experienced many stressful/painful experiences, but it also means they come with many skills and talents. Our students have a lot of passion and desire to be productive citizens, which they express through their academics and community activism. Most of our students are Puerto Rican, however we have students from different Latino ethnic backgrounds as well as African American students.

My Project

The video cameras will be used in our high school journalism class. Students will use cameras to produce news stories related to their community. They will edit the videos using imovie (until we can afford to purchase final cut pro) and publish videos on the school's website. This will give students an opportunity to create news stories that relate to their reality and their experiences.

Our students live in a community that is portrayed as filled with lazy and violent people, however our students and community members prove these stereotype wrong everyday.

Our students are critical thinkers and recognize the problems in their community and offer solutions. Often, when students read about their community in the newspaper the story is related to crime, murder, and/or unemployment. I want students to feel empowered to critically and creatively report in and about their community.
