My Students
I have 25 amazing, inquisitive, and eager to learn students. They are curious and always striving for new knowledge. It is because of them our classroom has an energetic, positive atmosphere which encourages all to work hard, learn, and improve even when the material is not easy.
They demonstrate excellence and are willing to share their understandings with others.
After 30 years of teaching I am still in love with my profession because of these imaginative students who are the future of our world.
My Project
"My mother named me after a cow's rear end." Shurtliff has created a backstory for the mysterious character Rumpelstiltskin that instantly draws students in. Students use words like: "magical, funny, adventurous, courageous, surprising, encouraging, and hope," when discussing the plot and main character, Rump.
Students relate easily to the main character of this book, and they cheer as he bumbles his way into overcoming struggles and his feeling of inadequacy.
Even reluctant and struggling readers are drawn to the story and often ask me to keep reading.
This "can't put it down," story will help students further develop a love of reading as it's plot turns and twists teach valuable life lessons. The power of words, love, and friendship are strongly supported.
A class set of this book would mean each child has a copy to read along with, analyze, and reread during class discussions helping with focus and concentration. Students would be able to bookmark passages and refer back to them to support their interpretations while conferring with classmates.
Rump is the first in a series of books of re-imagined fairy tale characters. Students will clamber to read the sequels; Red, Jack, and Grump after reading Rump. Having the sequel books available would expand students desire for independent reading.
While reading Rump, the class will also start a writing activity where students will research their own name and learn to write an expository essay about it. "Your name is your destiny."
