Your Art Studio Has What?

Help me give my students new alternatives for communicating their original ideas through art. The button maker will allow students in 4th grade to create advocacy art and the rotary tool will make cutting fabric for weaving faster!

My Students

As a special subject teacher, I have known my upper elementary art students for close to eight years now, which is pretty unique, and one of the best parts about being my school's art teacher. Fostering an ongoing relationship with kids from year to year means that a genuine mutual trust can been formed, which leads to greater freedom in the classroom and the opportunity to develop meaningful units that showcase a student's developing technique and curiosity in a topic.

Students in grades 3-5 are given the opportunity to grapple with challenging content as a result of maturing throughout the course of their arts education.

A strong desire to create, paired with access to unique and quality materials to fulfill the ideas students imagine for themselves, sets students up for success and a joy for engaging in the process of art making.

My Project

For an upcoming social studies collaboration, students in grade 4 will be creating advocacy art from the point of view of the American Colonists. After researching what life was like in the new world, they will weigh the pros and cons of settling in America and voice their perspectives boldly through art. The fancy button maker will allow students to mass produce and easily distribute logos, slogans, and hashtags to their school community that express their inner feelings about what life was like when disease, miserable weather, and the potential for religious freedoms dominated the scene. As the graduating class, our 5th graders will use the rotary cutter and self-healing mat to slice through fabric and other fibers quickly and accurately when creating textile weavings commemorating their entire elementary school careers.

Funky new tools in the art studio means funkier art!

My hope is that our upper elementary school students gain total freedom to elect whichever tools and media they believe will best communicate their ideas as they advance throughout their arts education. Access to a greater variety of tools and media will expand their ability to use art as a successful communication medium.
