This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For most of my children, this is their first experience being away from home and being separated from their families. Being away from home is difficult for most students but compounded with the pandemic, it can be a traumatic experience, none the less they come to school each day, full of energy, curiosity, excited to be here and ready to learn and play! To them, school is a place where they feel safe, loved, and valued. This difficult transition is also affected by their already existing life circumstances.

Our children come from low-income households and receive free breakfast and lunch.

With the right help, you can help make them feel as if their classroom is their home away from home and inspire a life-long love for learning.

My Project

Many children have been at the grocery store with their parents at one time or another; however, how many of them have had the opportunity to pick and bag their favorite fruits or vegetables? How many have been given the opportunity to handle money?

The grocery items, money and cash register will not only give the children an opportunity to go shopping for their favorite foods but learn many math concepts such as concept of number, money and financial literacy in a fun engaging developmentally appropriate manner.

They will learn how to become responsible consumers as they think critically when selecting their purchase, they will learn how to collaborate, communicate, and negotiate with their peers as they decide who will play the different roles required to run a grocery store and who will be the customer.
