This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For my students, early exposure to STEM activities will help them build the critical thinking, problem-solving, and basic math and science skills needed for success. My students have different learning needs, such as nonverbal, autistic, and some physical disabilities. By giving them these STEM activities I can incorporate sensory-rich experiences, hands-on manipulatives, and visual/tactile components that can make learning more accessible and engaging for them. These activities involve collaboration, which my students need.

For some, this is the first time in a classroom with other students and adults.

These activities will help foster important social-emotional skills, such as communication, cooperation, sharing, and patience. My time with these students has shown me that they learn best through play-based, hands-on experiences. STEM activities such as building structures, exploring simple machines, and conducting experiments or using science viewers allow children to actively engage in their learning rather than being passive recipients of information. For my ECSE students, this can be crucial for them to maintain attention and make abstract concepts more concrete.
