This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school motto is "Work Hard, Get Smart" and in my classroom, my students know that with hard work, they can achieve their goals. I encourage all my students to never give up no matter what obstacles get in your way.
My school is located in a low-income area and most of the students come from a low-socioeconomic family.
100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, and for many of them, these are the only healthy and warm meals they receive each day. Most of the families cannot provide their children with any school supplies, and so I must rely on either my own funds or help from donors to provide these much needed supplies. In addition, most of my students are native Spanish speakers and many face significant hardships outside of school.
Our school sets high expectations for all of our students and we teach them that by focusing on their education, they can achieve their goals. Many of my students have dreams of going to college and becoming professionals, but they have to work extra hard to overcome the disadvantages they face everyday.
My Project
My students have been working so hard this year on their writing and one of our units in the spring is a nonfiction piece. My ideal project is to have students write their own nonfiction books. My students will use the composition books to draft and collect their research about their non-fiction topic, and then my students will write their final version in the blank hard cover books. The students will illustrate the entire book too!
I remember making my own book when I was in 3rd grade and I still have it to this day. I want my kids to be excited about writing and take ownership of their book. Also, in addition to improving their writing, this project will also give us the opportunity to learn about text features (tables of contents, index, diagrams, etc) in nonfiction text. The students will create their own text features in their book, which will reinforce their learning and understanding of text features.
Many of my students are hesitant writers.
This project will excite them and motivate them to write about a topic of their choice. Given that I still have my book from 3rd grade, I want my students to have that same feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction that I did at their age with my book. This is a project that my students will keep for many, many years, and I am excited to see what they can create!
