My students will be learning about simple machines and renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. In order to really learn how to think like scientists, I want them to be able to conduct experiments. My students need more materials that engage them in scientific inquiries to help them.
I teach science in a school in Brooklyn with a 57% poverty rate.
I work with 250 second grade to fifth grade students. My students are always full of questions. They enjoy doing experiments in class, observing, manipulating materials, measuring, and making predictions. They love to learn how scientists gather and share information.
My Project
Using the wind power kit my students will discover how the wind provides us with an endless source of energy. They will study the physics of force and motion as it applies to wind power technology. With the solar kit they will teach them how solar power is used to drive a small motor. They will also use the two simple machine kits to conduct experiments in building simple machines that help them understand levers, pulleys and gear work.
I want to introduce my young scientists to the value of harnessing solar and wind energy and maximizing the use of renewable resources.
