My Students

Many children in this low income neighborhood are only fed processed foods and junk foods, yet many families comes from agricultural roots. This project will allow students to reconnect with the Earth and their family, and take control over their food futures. They will truly be growing their own meals.

Help us teach kids about where food comes from and how to eat healthy!

By working in our school garden children will learn to collaborate, plan, and accomplish their goals all while getting their green thumbs.

My Project

Many children in this low income neighborhood are only fed processed foods and junk foods, yet many families comes from agricultural roots. This project will allow students to reconnect with the Earth and their family, and take control over their food futures. They will truly be growing their own meals.

My students yearn for fresh produce and the chance to get their hands dirty in the pursuit of science and nutrition.

These youngsters are dismayed at the quality of food available in their community. When they were told that they could grow their own lunches, kids went wild with anticipation. They talk of how their parents have worked in fields and how they want to be healthy by eating more veggies. This project will allow students to learn a great deal about horticulture, agriculture, and botany and nutrition as well. We will use the This project will succeed as students plan and produce all the bountiful harvests!

There is a wealth of research that supports the fact that students enjoy eating vegetables that they had a hand in growing. The goal of this project is for students in a low income area to experience the joy of harvesting fresh produce that they had an interest in growing. The healthy lifestyle and appreciation of botanical sciences is directly related to many families histories in agricultural labor in California.

We hope to utilize the resources from this grant (seeds and fertilizers) to learn vital science concepts about testing hypothesis and controlling variables. We will write about fragrances and textures in the garden in English, and read from the books about the important role plants have played throughout human History. We will create a learning environment grounded in plants where students will meet and exceed numerous Common Core standards in this project.
