Can you remember when you wrote your first story? My students will! I'll be creating an experience with them they will remember forever. We will first go on a field trip to a local museum to help inspire us with ideas. We will then be creating our own books and share them with a big celebration.
I teach 30 wonderful kindergarten students in a full day program.
They come from over 11 different countries and are eager to learn. Writing is something that many of my students struggle with. It is important to motivate them with fun projects and show them different purposes of writing. With funding being taken away all over the city, I am lacking the supplies needed for a special project in my classroom.
My Project
My students are just beginning to write. They will be progressing throughout the year from labeling pictures to writing sentences. By winter, each child will be writing a book as part of the Young Authors program our school participates in. Although our books are only about 4-6 sentences, it is a big deal for a 5 year old to write a story. In order for us to make this a special project, my classroom is in need of supplies to help publish and write the books. I have asked for picture dictionaries to help them with spelling and ideas. Teaching a child to use a dictionary will be a skill they will take with them throughout the grades. I have also asked for two heavy duty electric pencil sharpeners, so the students always have sharp pencils. Once our stories are complete, it will be time to make them into books. I have requested card stock so we can make sturdy covers. I have also requested additional paper and crayons to illustrate and decorate our books.
We conclude our "Young Authors" project with a tea party in the lunchroom.
We have a light snack of juice and cookies, and each child gets on the microphone and reads his/her book to the class. Parents and other teachers also attend. It is a great experience for the children, and your help will make it possible! Thanks!
