Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an advisory class- a group of 19 energetic and creative students who constantly ask me when we'll be doing the next arts and crafts activity. They love art- viewing it, analyzing it, and especially making it. My goal is to turn every advisory session into an opportunity to be artistic.

My students come from all five boroughs of New York City.

They also come from a wide array of backgrounds and experiences. Some of those experiences are rooted in a strong sense of identity which helps them to power through the difficult moments in their lives. Other experiences weigh them down with worry, fear, and feelings of defeat. Our school operates as a safe haven where young people can come and just be themselves. I hope to carry on that tradition by offering more opportunities for them to express themselves. And art has been and will always be a great tool for self-expression.

My Project

My students will use the arts and crafts supplies in our advisory group sessions held three times per week for an hour. An example of some of the crafts that we'll need is a Votive Candle-making kit which we'll use to place on the tables during our weekly Poet's Cafe. We'll also need Street Pulp Mask kits which we'll decorate to make characters for role-playing activities. We'll also need modeling clay for sculpture. Finally, we'll need a Basketry kit so that students can learn the art of weaving as well as create marker-holders for group work. This is a time for students to kick back, talk about what's going on in their lives, and engage in some hands-on activities that are fun and inspiring.

Because our school doesn't have an official art class, we use our advisory group sessions as a way for students to both earn credit in art and to participate in the joy that art brings to all of our lives.
