Young Adult Fantasy Literature Circles

Help me give my students a chance to read fantasy novels from multicultural perspectives.

My Project

Our middle school students gobble up the fantasy novels we have in our school library, so for this unit, we'll bring young adult fantasy novels to our small-group, literature circles.

This collection of books is from a diverse set of authors and has all been published in the past four years.

After our unit on Greek mythology, our fantasy books will bring together different reading levels and characters from worlds inspired by Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, African American, Native American, and Indian mythology.

In literature circles, students can have a choice about what they read. This leads to excitement and engagement. We will also use these books to deepen student's understanding of the genre, the social issues they raise, and how the hero in the story grows from their experiences.
