Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school, located in Ridgewood, Queens, come from a very diverse background in regard to culture and socioeconomic status. At our school, we do not have a gymnasium for our PE classes. Fortunately, the students love for their PE class and program at our school, regardless of socioeconomic status, allows us to make the most of our resources and time together. The Physical Education program at our school continues to grow each year and would love to grow even more.
With SEL being a major focal point for our students this year, we decided that beginning a yoga club would help us learn more about how to manage our emotions given the circumstances we are living in today.
The students unfortunately don’t have mats that they could use in our gym space. Luckily, this doesn’t stop them from practicing yoga during our time together.
The enthusiasm that I see emerge from our students when we practice yoga is amazing and I believe they would benefit if we were able to obtain yoga mats for our school to use.
My Project
By providing our school with yoga mats, we can further teach SEL skills to all our students and staff, Health Related fitness components, hygiene, and much more. The community of our school and students would benefit from this project. These resources would be used for our entire school year after year, which would be a benefit from new students, especially at the younger levels. This will encourage parents to practice yoga at home. Although the mats would stay in school, practicing yoga at home is possible without the mat, therefore preserving the mats longevity.
