You Wish Your Chemistry Teacher Did This Lab

My students need a variety of coffee samples and coffee filters to learn about the concepts of acids, bases, and pH and investigate how the pH of a cup of coffee can affect its taste.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a large urban high school where students come from a variety of risk factors- low income, gangs, a history of violence and teenage parenting. Many have sworn these teenagers off as not worth anything. But, I can tell you after working with them, how incredibly wonderful, gifted, and worthy they are of all the same learning opportunities that other students have. I am helping my students prepare for the demands of college by providing meaningful lab activities and experiences and supporting my students in developing their writing skills by writing scientific lab reports.

I am constantly developing Chemistry activities to make my subject meaningful to the students I work with. Otherwise, students want to know why they should care and how will this apply to their lives. Chemistry has so many meaningful relationships to their real life. If I can help them to find Chemistry interesting, I can hook them into learning about Chemistry. If I can hook them, I can simultaneously help them develop problem solving skills in lab and writing skills through lab reports that will prepare them for college level work. When I teach my unit on acids and bases, we discuss all kinds of real life examples such as fish tanks, swimming pools, antacids, and coffee to get them interested.

The students are interested! My most successful lab for my unit on acids and bases has been my coffee lab. I need your help in purchasing a variety of coffee samples and filters to help make this lab a success once again. My students look at the various factors that affect a cup of coffee (brew, bean type, flavor, decaf, instant, etc) and develop a testable hypothesis on which factors affect the taste of a cup of coffee. We then test the coffees in the lab for an optimal pH (4.9-5.3, in case you were wondering). With your donation my students will also be able to taste test the samples and compare their scientific findings to their taste buds. They LOVE looking at coffee samples and trying to find out which makes the best cup of coffee.

I have had great success with this lab in the past but the price tag is a little too high for myself to continue donating the materials by myself. We need you! This activity would make you wish you were in a chemistry class like mine! Learning can be fun and I'm proving that to my students everyday. Thank you for your support.
