FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Reeves's classroom raised $804

I am the Science Lab teacher at an elementary school in a large urban area in Illinois. The school is located in a low income area of the city, and our students do not get much assistance at home with observing the natural world and talking about science. The students come to the science lab often to do the really messy activities (it is one of the favorite classes for all our students but especially the young ones). Our fantastic faculty works hard to prepare the children for the lab with information on what they will be doing and what question they are looking to answer with the activity.

In elementary school students are being introduced to many concepts and to science equipment. Often the young students learn best by watching the teacher use the syringe to draw water before they attempt it, assemble the lever and fulcrum, or point out the markings on a crayfish or seed. We are lucky to have a large room as our science lab so the children have plenty of space to move around and work, but it is not so good for watching demonstrations and directions. I usually have to walk from table to table, explaining the details again and again, or gather all the children close to the demonstration table (which inevitably leads to pushing and whining) to show the students what to do.

In the old days (like when I was in school mumble mumble years ago) the teacher used a large mirror over a table to give students a better view. Today we would use an ELMO, a document camera that can project the demonstration onto a large screen so everyone can see well. The children of all grades will be able to understand the directions more clearly as they watch how to use the equipment, or in the upper grades, observe chemical reactions, convection in a beaker of boiling oatmeal, or experiments involving fire which we do not want them close to.

Hands on learning is the best, as long as you know what you are doing and why. Correct use of science equipment is one of our state standards. Keeping the children safe while showing them the magic of science is our priority. With the document camera they can see there is no trickery, as there can be in movies. The demonstration is going on on the table and they can see what is happening on the large screen. This simple piece of equipment will add so much to our science teaching. Your generous gift could provide the spark that inspires a student to achieve great things.
