You Say Achebe; I Say Adichie!: Part II

Achebe or Adichie? Why not both? Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a reading requirement for our English II readers. It is a beautiful book that informs readers about Nigerian life; however, it is sometimes a difficult (and boring) book for teenagers to connect with. Purple Hibiscus, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, captures many of the cultural themes expressed in Things Fall Apart, but in a way high school 10th graders find more authentic to their lives. At first, the students who were assigned this book moaned and groaned, however, at the end of the unit, many of the students said that it was a book that they would read again! I have used Purple Hibiscus in literature circles with very positive results. The students identified with the 15 year old protagonist and the 1st person point of view. They were also able to identify the themes associated with family dynamics and to compare an author's use of literary devices from other novels and memoirs that we covered in class: Oedipus, Siddhartha, Things Fall Apart, and Night. Purple Hibiscus also served to illuminate the changes that have occurred in post-colonial Nigeria. I would like to incorporate this wonderful novel into my classroom curriculum for all my students, but our department budget for the coming school year has been maxed out. In the past, I have asked students to purchase books individually, but this places a burden on many families and does not benefit future students. I am asking for 20 copies of the book for my students. This donation would greatly benefit my classroom. Your donation would make it possible for students to encounter a text that educates and entertains.
