Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach mathematics in a high needs high school - over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world.
Working at one of the last large schools in the Bronx, I've always had to compete for resources. Earlier this school year the competition got even more severe when all NYC school budgets were cut 3% across the board. Yet still, it is my task to give my students an educational foundation which not only lets them graduate high school, but also prepares them for college.
In my particular case, one issue I'm dealing with is the need to constantly move from one room to another. Unlike some of my suburban counterparts, I don't have my own classroom. Rather, I move from one room to another for each of my classes. I'm always looking for ways to improve the speed and efficiency of working in this "nomadic" environment.
The pieces in this proposal should all contribute towards that efficiency. For example, I've got an AV cart to move equipment from room to room, and I'm requesting is a laptop shelf for this cart, to make setup quicker at the start of class. I'm requesting a power strip and extension cord so I can quickly get electricity to my equipment. I'm requesting a chair on casters to make it easier to get students to the equipment for their presentations. Last, I'm requesting a comb binder to make it easier for me to copy and distribute packets of materials corresponding to our units of study.
My main objective is to help all my students meet and exceed state standards. I also feel my incorporation of technology in my lessons helps prepare my students for college, by increasing their familiarity.
