Remember being seven? I imagine that you were smart, creative and full of energy. Well, that sums up my students! However, we lack a functioning radio/CD player to facilitate important movement in the classroom.
My students range in ages between 6-7 years old.
Overall, they are smart, energetic, creative Second graders in a public school in New York City. My students exhibit their intelligence in different ways. Very few of them enjoy sitting in their seat reading, writing, or completing Math assignments for long periods at a time. They show more enthusiasm when they are moving around, socializing with a partner, or when they are engaged in activities that require them to work cooperatively. They are also very hard-working and deserve breaks throughout the day to stabilize their creative juices as well as let out a little energy.
My Project
I am requesting a quality boombox with a CD player and an iPod docking station to facilitate movement to music in the classroom. We also need a wallet to store our CDs in. This year, I attended a valuable workshop/training that has changed my whole perspective on the importance of movement in the classroom. Movement to music in the classroom not only inspires children's' creativity, but it also combats childhood obesity. My students need more physical activity each day than they currently receive. One period of physical education per week and 20 minutes for outdoor recess in good weather is simply not enough.
I plan to incorporate movement to music activities at least 5 times per day, everyday in my classroom. We will create movements to promote memory, Math skills, and to build community in the classroom. It is important to me that my students are excited about coming to school every day and I believe that incorporating daily movement to music will keep their enthusiasm about learning at a high level.
All too often, children are stuck in classrooms without adequate movement or exercise.
They are forced to sit in their seats all day long, which increases boredom and inappropriate behavior. Children are creative beings and are often inspired by music and movement. You can help my students improve their stamina for learning and combat childhood obesity at the same time. Your donation would make a profound difference in the lives of my students.
