My Students

Many of my students are on the autism spectrum, some stutter, others have mild to moderate cognitive challenges, but all have some form of language-based disability. It can be tough for them to navigate their education. They need special strategies and resources including communication books and pages to help them get their ideas across to others.

My students are bright, funny, sweet, technology-loving children.

They need extra help to develop their language, social interaction, and life skills. My goal is to target authentic language and give them strategies so they can work around their disabilities – for learning and for happy, successful lives.

My Project

"You got anything to eat?" That's the first thing many of my students ask me. They sometimes stop by between classes looking for something to keep them going through the school day. Having some healthy snacks on hand is just a necessity.

Hungry kids don't learn as well as kids who feel safe, secure, and have food in their stomachs.

In my classroom, students always have access to water and food. I often have a full fruit bowl on my desk for anyone to "take what they need." It makes a difference. We take a moment to eat and drink when we need to. Then, we get down to some serious work. Learning a language is hard – especially for my kids who have disabilities. Trying to force them to learn while hungry would be a battle I don't care to fight. And I wouldn't win. My students must have their basic needs met so we can tackle our work and enjoy our learning.

Thank you for considering this project. I'm happy to supply food for my students, but support from the public helps keep my pantry full for all those in need. I'd love to have your help. Thank you!
