I provide speech and language therapy to students preschool through 8th grade in three schools on the south side of Chicago. Primarily, I work with children with special needs who benefit from learning through multiple modalities, including visual aides, moving around, and auditory input. My students are curious, passionate, and are excited to learn. As I enter my 3rd year with many of these students, I have been amazed at how much they have taught me about resilience, compassion, and strength.
My Project
Using apps in speech therapy has been proven to keep students more motivated and increase growth towards goals, as compared to traditional therapy methods. Students are exposed to more and more technology these days, and it is important to follow their lead in engaging activities. By using an iPad in speech therapy, students get immediate visual and auditory feedback that benefits progress and engagement. Also, as a speech therapist I often see groups of 4-5 students of different ages and at different skill levels. The iPad is a simple way to differentiate lessons and provide activities to students at all levels.
