Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I often tell my students, "You could convince me." It’s my way of encouraging them to use their communicative expression—to advocate, persuade, and practice their skills in a fun, real-world way. Sometimes, it earns them an extra sticker for the treasure box, but always, it strengthens their confidence.

As a bilingual speech-language therapist, I know therapy can sometimes feel repetitive.

Worksheets and drills have their place, but let’s face it—they can get boring. That’s why I strive to make our sessions engaging and joyful. Children learn best through meaningful play, and I aim to create a space where therapy feels less like work and more like discovery.

This creative approach often requires materials and flexible resources. I serve students from low-income households, many of whom face daily challenges that would be difficult for most adults to carry. Yet, despite those stressors, they show up with resilience, heart, and joy that constantly inspire me.

I try to meet that strength with effort and care—by listening, personalizing their space, celebrating their wins, and making them feel seen. I’d love to build a therapy room that reflects that intention: a space with a cozy reading nook, a calm corner, organized materials, and visuals to support their learning. I envision clean, simple decorations, areas to showcase their work and classroom rules, and a whiteboard for visuals and goals. A projector would allow me to share short videos and language activities with the whole group—without everyone crowding around an iPad.
