My students need standard compound microscopes to look at cells. Cells are very abstract and it is very important that they see the them while they develop the skills to use the microscope.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in an inner city high school. Seventy five percent of my students qualify for free lunch. Because of the architecture and design theme of my school three quarters of my students are boys.
Most of my students are from homes where English is not the primary language and they have very little educational support.
The majority of my students begin the ninth grade reading well below level. Despite their challenges they come to class being curious and full of energy. I realized that they learn and retain content more successfully when they are engaged in hands-on activities and when they use scientific apparatuses.
My Project
My students are tactile learners and the microscopes will provide them with many engaging hands on experiences. However, they also struggle with understanding the concept of cells and processes that occur in them. They need to be able to see what the cells look like to deepen their knowledge about cells.
The microscopes will provide my students with many opportunities to interact with cells in meaningful and tangible ways.
Furthermore, the abstract concepts of cells would become real and relevant to them while they use the microscopes. They will have enjoyable and authentic science lab experiences when they use these microscopes!
