My Project
I am a first year librarian in a Title I school that is a Fine Arts Magnet school. I was hired to fill a long-empty position. My school has not had a librarian in over 10 years. The books were outdated, and the environment was cold and empty. The district used ESSER funds to purchase new books, which just arrived, and my students are excited to have new, relevant books to read.
Now my students need rugs, cushions, and soft chairs to curl up and enjoy the new books.
The only furniture in the library is hard chairs and tables. Providing students with soft, flexible seating, where they can spread out, will help them better engage in reading for enjoyment. It is important that students do non-academic reading, and read what they are interested in. Reading is reading, and any reading will improve their academic skills. My goal is to provide students with books they will "get lost" in, and places where they can do so comfortably.
