I've run out of funds to purchase additional Jolly Ranchers for my math classes and I'm almost out. I use the treats to promote correct classroom behaviors. I like to walk around at the beginning of class with my Jolly Rancher bag in hand and drop a Jolly on students' desks when they are doing their self-starter problems and filling out their planners. I use them to reward students who use our math vocabulary when they are describing how to solve problems. It's nice to have something on hand to give an immediate, sweet "thank you!"
When I have a class that performs a "call and response" with energy and enthusiasm, I give them each a Jolly Rancher as a reward or I'll bribe them ahead of time to do it well the first time.
I use a variety of call and response memory tools for topics like the percent equation, the additive inverse property, etc. I love that I can use this tool the whole year long and it will bring instant recall for the students to the topic we covered, even if it was months ago! The Jolly Ranchers help me train them to value this tool!
