I work with eager 6th grade scientists. Working in an urban school district with limited science funding, I am looking for a way to help teach my students about mass.
The concept of mass is extremely difficult to teach without proper tools such as a triple beam balance and scales. So many of our students go on to middle school/high school without the knowledge of how to use this equipment.
These would be extremely helpful to both my classroom and grade level. My students are preparing for the New York State 8th grade science test. Our district has seen a huge gap between the performance of our 4th graders on the science test and the 8th graders. I hope that with these balances and scales I will help to change the gap that exists.
Your assistance with this project would make a world of impact on our measurement unit. Not only will it benefit the science curriculum but also math. You will make it possible for my students to have a better chance of passing the 8th grade science test AND furthering their love for science and the use of manipulatives!
