First graders are budding mathematicians who are busy developing strong foundational skills. We solve addition and subtraction problems by using concepts such as adding to, putting together, taking from, and taking apart. We practice our doubles strategy, and then our near doubles. We also count back to subtract, think addition to subtract, and more--so many strategies!
The key to becoming a successful mathematician is using strategies efficiently--which means helping students progress from using their fingers as tools to using math manipulatives like rekenreks.
This is where you come into play--please help me provide my first graders with math tools to help increase their efficiency when using math strategies.
