Thanks to a previously-funded DonorsChoose proposal, my students fell in love with the vibrant colors of "Mural Paint." We used these paints to help finish a mural on campus, and the colors pop after just one coat. Students beg to use the paints, so I had to try to get some more -- enter, this proposal!
One way that we've built a sense of belonging in our advisory classroom is by painting art and quotes that go with our campus word-of-the-month.
We display the art on our classroom door and around the room. September was 'kuleana' (responsibility), and this month is 'pilina' or belonging. We play music, and students can create something meaningful for them that fits the category. They then share it with the class. It's really helped us bond as an advisory class.
On our Panorama Fall 2024 survey, our campus scored 54% positive on "students feel a sense of belonging" on campus. While that score has gone up, and is above the state average for middle school, we know we have a lot of work to do to help students belong. Art and communication help this effort, especially in an advisory class.
