You Be A Film Maker - Digital Storytelling

I teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in a community where the majority of our families receive free or reduced lunch.

The current economic crisis has had a significant negative impact on our community; not only have parents lost jobs, but teachers have been laid off, furloughed and all our district funding has been frozen.

Despite these monetary challenges, we believe strongly in the positive role technology plays in educating 21st century learners and would like to afford our students this opportunity, regardless of the economic barriers they may encounter in their homes. We believe creativity transcends the boundaries of economics, race or social class. Students love to see themselves on video. They live in a digital age and are bombarded by the media on a daily basis. We want to seize upon their interest and aptitude with media and use video as a means for them to think critically, showcase their creativity, share their knowledge and acquire new knowledge from their peers. My students need 5 copies of the video editing software Vegas Movie Studio 9. Students would use this video editing software as part of digital storytelling units. Digital storytelling can be used on any grade level and with any subject. Students would research a topic and then present their projects via film. The process of making a film is made up of 5 components: planning, shooting the video, editing, enhancing and sharing. This software will enable our students to present their information in a "real world" manner and challenge them to think creatively in how to best communicate their knowledge.

It has been our experience that video is a terrific medium for engaging students. They never say "I'm bored!" when watching and learning from one another. Help us take the word "bored" out of their vocabularies and give them a relevant and highly motivating way to present what they know!!
