My Students
Do you remember being in 8th grade and wondering about the future? Could I be a doctor, teacher, farmer, or maybe even president? In our small town, many students do not even know what careers surround them every day.
Middle school students in Manila have the same desires for the future that any other youth their age has.
Unfortunately, low socioeconomics can stunt the dreams of some students. At this critical age, 8th grade, it is very important that they begin to plan for the "not-so distant" future. However, many students in this poor, rural community are not even aware of the jobs and career opportunities in their own area.
My Project
The students will use this tablet computer as a valuable research tool to investigate the job and career outlook in their own community. Then they will work in collaborative teams to identify a business professional, major employer or entrepreneur in the community. As a team they will use the tablet and their creative writing skills to compile a list of interview questions. Then using the same tablet, they will video a short interview with the selected professional about their career field. Finally, using the video footage captured on the tablet, each team will report their findings to the entire class.
The only hope many rural communities have for a future is their children.
Many of my students believe they are destined to dead-end jobs at home, or they assume they will move far away. This project will give them a chance to see that they can be productive and successful in their own community. They may even realize that with their help, their community can be a great place to live, work and raise a family one day. Will you invest in their future?
