My Project
Got Yoga? I have incorporated yoga into my classroom for many years and have seen the positive impact it has in the daily lives of students. I have especially witnessed the benefit of mindful movement and breathing as it relates to physical, social, emotional and mental wellness.
Furthermore, as a literacy specialist, I have seen how yoga motivates students to read and helps not only with explicit learning, but implicit learning.
I am thrilled students are willing to engage in a practice that enhances both literacy and self-esteem; students are simply more focused when it’s time for instruction. My yoga practice combines the flow of movement, breathwork, meditation with reading to reduce stress, anxiety and the lack of confidence that sometimes comes with being a struggling reader or when faced with a challenging reading task. Many students feel defeated when it comes to reading, but yoga teaches them strategies they can use to persevere through the uncertain times. Unfortunately, we need equipment and materials such as yoga mats, yoga balls, water bottles and towels. Donations to this project will allow us to continue this amazing literacy journey!
I aspire to see my future leaders thrive in a healthy, literacy-rich environment where they feel safe and inspired to read. My students want an education that will teach them to be the best versions of themselves and succeed inside and outside of the classroom.
