Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in the San Fernando Valley where the majority of children have not attended pre-school. This is the first year our school has taught all day with kinders, and so I now have the time to do this activity with them. This is my ninth year of teaching at Winnetka Elementary, and I am seeing more children start school unprepared for the rigors of kindergarten. More children have attentional problems, and less opportunity for the kind of stimulation that will engage their minds, spirits and bodies. I would like to begin teaching the children some yoga postures and breathing exercises in the afternoon after academics. I would like to do this outside where they could spread out and get some fresh air. I would need to give each child a non-slippery yoga mat. As someone who has benefitted from practicing yoga, I think that my students would also benefit. I think the breathing exercises would teach them how to become calmer, centered, and improve their ability to concentrate. The postures are wonderful for stretching and balance as well as creating physically fit bodies. I have 22 students in my class and all would be participating. Again, I believe that if my students had child sized yoga mats (the non-slippery kind) to learn yoga postures and breathing, they would benefit greatly and also have fun.
