Yoga for Social Change

My students need yoga mats, blocks, and a reference poster to refer to.

My Students

My Chicago Students are the best; hands down. My kids enjoy challenging the status quo with courage, awareness, integrity, and commitment. It is these qualities that our kids chose to live up to at the beginning of the year.

My students generally come from the neighborhood surrounding our school.

That being said, many students were displaced from their homes a few years ago due to the project housing towers around the school being torn down.

The kids LOVE to have their voices heard in many different ways, including spoken word/poetry and creative nonfiction writing.

My Project

My middle school students have a very difficult time focusing on their academic work because of the emotional and hormonal issues that come up so frequently.

My kids have real life conflicts, real hardships they are dealing with aside from the developmental changes that are a reality.

I believe that consistent yoga practice, asanas and breathing, will help infuse mindfulness into kids' lives. This could result in impulse-control and confidence-boosting.

We will practice yoga daily for fifteen minutes at the beginning of our social science class. We will connect the ideas and feeling from yoga to social justice.

Our practice will consist of breathing, meditation, and physical postures. We are hoping to bring this work to the community beyond the classroom.
