Yoga for Early Childhood Developement

My students need Yoga mats to use during our daily Yoga sessions at school to meet PE requirements. More importantly, to learn to focus on themselves and their well-being.

My Students

Kindergarten is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or hold a paintbrush, pencil, or crayon. All of the students are literally learning to hop, skip, and jump. Fine and gross motor development is a large portion of kindergarten learning.

In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.

Last year, our kinder community learned to practice Yoga. This ancient practice visably produced physically, socially, and emotionally stronger students. This lead to higher end-of-year outcomes academically.

We are part of a k-12 school that celebrates inclusion. I teach in a pod of two kindergarten classes and two 1st grade classes. My classroom is about building skills collaboratively. The work we do in this classroom is about building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and helping students to learn to teach each other, learn from each other and lead each other.

My Project

The yoga mats will be a fantastic alternative to what we used last year...cotton towels. The towels slid on the gym floor causing a safety issue and were constanly in need of washing (by me at home). The Yoga mats will enhance the practice by allowing studens to stand, stretch, jump, breathe, and be a part of a classroom community learning to use the practice of Yoga to take care of themselves.

These mats will provide a safe way to incorperate a life-long skill of taking care of the mind, body, and spirit through an ancient practice.

The kids absolutely love it! I find them practicing breathing and stretching on recess. It's adorable!
