This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the dance teacher in a large and energetic school where creativity, respect for others, and trying our best are the keys to learning. Many of my students have never had dance before, while some have learned dance from family members or online via TikTok or Fortnite.

I love that my students are eager to explore dance and use their bodies to express themselves.

They are clearly curious about the different ways we can express ourselves through movement. They are most excited about ballet, tap, and yoga, but have asked about many dance styles and types of music! I can’t wait to teach it all to them.

My Project

This has been an incredibly tough year and a half for young students. They are having to relearn the most basic skills of being around friends and classmates again while remembering extra rules to help keep everyone safe as we continue to battle with the pandemic. Students need help remembering how to wait their turn to speak, stay socially distant, and wear masks the entire school day. Many children have also expressed anxiety over the return to the classroom after being gone for so long.

Students want to be around their friends and teachers again, but need help controlling their bodies in space - and yoga is perfect for this!

Yoga mats can give students a "safe zone" to practice movement without bumping into others. They also allow dancers to learn new and challenging skills as they learn to express themselves through movement. The yoga dice game encourage kids to work together while stretching their bodies, and the expanding ball will aid with relaxation as we practice grounding ourselves. Please consider helping us add these wonderful assets to the dance classroom!
