My Students
I work with students in grades 6th-8th who are all struggling in reading. We are currently using the Just Words program and I-ready computer program, which requires students to do a lot of sitting. Yoga balls would be a great way to incorporate movement, and encourage focus during our lessons.
I teach in a Title 1 school, so most of my students are coming from low income situations.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. They are eager to learn, but need a lot of differentiation based on their learning needs. My goal is to inspire them in any way possible to fully participate in their learning. They love to try new things, and always want to be on the go. I thought using the yoga balls would be a great way to keep them focused and moving, which in turn will help them master the reading concepts we are covering.
My Project
My goal is to have my students replace their traditional chairs with 15 yoga balls at their tables and when using computers. I have a hard time sitting in a traditional chair myself, and like my students, I need to be moving as I learn. The Just Words program is a lot of teacher talk and table work, so I thought incorporating the yoga balls would provide students with a more engaging learning experience, and motivate them to stay on task.
Anything that will encourage my students to want to fully participate in improving their reading skills is going to change their lives' for the better.
I am always looking for ways to make my classroom a fun and engaging place to be. My hope is that the yoga balls will excite my students because they are something different than the norm.
