Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Good morning Scholars! Why did you come to school today?" "We came to school to learn!" This is the morning chant that all students at our school participate in before class starts.
Students are eager to learn and love a challenge.
The majority of my students are Latino and/or African-American. Our school is located in a working class neighborhood of Southwest Los Angeles. Everyday we strive to ensure that our students are college bound and ready to be positive contributors to their community and society at large.
My Project
My students need yoga mats to deepen their practice of yoga in the classroom. Practicing yoga in the classroom has many benefits. Yoga not only strengthens the physical body by increasing coordination, flexibility and body awareness, it also reduces stress levels by increasing mindfulness.
Having a classroom set of yoga mats will provide a safe place for students to practice yoga poses without the worry of slipping out of poses.
The mats will also provide a safe space for students to hold their poses longer, thereby increasing their core strength and coordination. Students will also use the mats to sit comfortably and practice belly breathing, which has been shown to improve respiratory function, exercise adherence and emotion and stress regulation.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
