Yo Quiero Español (II)

My students need a 10-person listening/recording center.

I am a Spanish I (and Honors Spanish II) high school teacher in a high-need community of Illinois. My students range anywhere between 9th-12th graders and about 20% of all my students have special needs and require special services. Most of the time when my students are learning difficult concepts (e.g. grammar), I make a song about the concept or vocabulary to help invest them and help them fully learn the material. Towards the end of this year, one of my students who CREATED his own aid-song (to the beat of Beyonce's 'Irreplaceable') thought it would be helpful if we could have a listening station where they can listen to previous lessons in a meaningful way (i.e. dialogs) and record their responses so they can practice a concept they may have not fully-grasped. The community in which my school is in is predominantly English-speaking and with only one computer lab in the school and no language lab, students are solely dependent on their foreign language teachers for speaking and listening practices, but with a portable listening center that has the capability to record, students will be able to practice both of those skills as much as they want and need. Also, having this listening center will enable me to record lessons and aid-songs onto CDs that my students can take home and/or put into their mp3 players - which will be of great help for my students with special needs. The listening station will provide my students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of the customs, arts, literature, and geography associated with the Spanish language & the Latino(a) culture, as well as to make connections across academic disciplines (e.g. History, Music, Art, English) in an engaging technological way, which will help get them even more prepared for college. My students love being able to acquire the necessary skills to communicate within and outside the classroom in Spanish. Your help with this project will really help my students become more proficient in Spanish and continue to be interested and invested in school and in their overall learning.
