My Students
As a teacher of all girls in Southeast, Washington, DC, my students face several challenges outside of the classroom, including poverty and excessive violence in the community. However, when you walk into my classroom, you see sisterhood, leadership, and collaborative work. My students are full of energy, personality, and eager to learn each day.
My girls are driven by purpose and challenges; they are motivated by their experiences and strive to exceed all limitations society has set for their lives.
My girls are learning the power of solidarity and leadership. They are learning the power in literacy, writing, and public speaking. They are resilient, ambitious, and hard working. They rise to the occasion and overcome academic, social, and familial obstacles on a daily basis.
My Project
We use novels daily in our classroom and my students read a new novel every unit. However, because students are not able to take novels home, students are limited in the amount of time they are able to spend reading the novels. My students ask me everyday if they can take the novels home to read ahead, continue after a cliff-hanger, or to find evidence to support their claims in their essays.
With these class sets of novels, students will be able to not only take their book home to continue reading, but they will be able to make annotations in the book and add the book to their own personal libraries.
My students will use these novels to extend their comprehension of unit themes, and create even more positive experiences with reading by allowing them to dive into literature from home and bring their ideas to class each day. My students will be more confident in participating in class discussions and writing essays when they are given more time to work with the text. These novels will also be promoting life long literacy practices that will prepare them for high school, college, and career!
