My Students

Public speaking is an art form that is disappearing. With increasing technology and less emphasis on the basic communication skills, there is a growing gap in our students' abilities to deliver persuasive arguments in front of audiences.

One hundred percent of my students are minorities who deal with gangs, drugs, and violence on a daily basis.

School is not a punishment, but an escape from the problems of our troubled city. Despite the troubles our students face on a daily basis, on their way to school in the morning or on their way home after school, their bright faces and hopeful smiles keep our school motivated and thriving. Never will you meet students with so little material but so much perseverance and hope. Thanks to these young minds, our school has become a safe haven for some and a beacon of hope for many more who now believe they may go to college. Walking down the hall you will see the ex-gang banger or the former tagger... did I mention they have 3.0 GPA now? Our students drive our teachers and keep us coming back for more. I can imagine teaching no where else and with no other group of students.

My Project

Stand a student in front of a class and they freeze. Stand a student behind a podium and listen to them preach! Our students come in years and years behind grade level where reading, let alone public speaking, is a heavy task. As we continue to train our students to be global citizens and college ready students, part of that includes the ability to present and speak. We thrive to create a professional environment for our students and this lectern will help do just that. The proudest day of a teacher's career is watching their students graduate and deliver speeches behind a lectern/podium. Help us make our speeches and graduations memorable by helping fund our lectern!

It is more important today that we encourage our students to develop their abilities to speak in public as those skills continue to decline with the increasing use of technology.

Your donations will allow my students to speak with confidence and pride in preparation for their own big day on the stage. As we continue to guide our students down the path of college readiness, this lectern will help us develop the skills to be public speakers and leaders.
