This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th grade in an urban, inner city school. My 31 students are second language learners, Title 1, and fall into the lowest socioeconomic bracket. Our school community is high-need, as there are very few positive role models for our students - most adults have not graduated high school, and there is a big gang and drug problem in our area. Cultural and language barriers are further impediments to students' families.
My children can succeed, but need that extra little push for motivation. Self-created books are huge incentives for my students to write, but we need the materials to make books that don't have curled pages from using wet school glue. These books are hands-on, high interest ways for students to creatively publish writings on any subject in the curriculum. They are also a way to keep the arts alive in the classroom during this time of high stakes testing.
I have two projects I'd like to be able to complete. In one, students will learn about artists' lives and styles, then create miniature art pieces in those style and write small biographies. The other project chronicles westward movement in 19th century America via summaries and illustrations.
While we have paper and basic art supplies at school, what we lack is glue that can be used to construct the books so that the pages lay flat and don't buckle any where glue is put. Books that look good and will last are a real motivator! Please won't you help me get my students excited about writing and publishing and creating and....LEARNING?!
What may seem like a small thing to you can truly change how a child looks at school and feels about themselves as learners. Kids who don't see a future for themselves give up at an alarmingly early age. Your donation will help a child achieve and feel a sense of pride. You really can make that kind of difference! Please, won't you?
