My Project
Kids follow pathways that are known and accessible to them, and not often enough will you have a kid who dreams of becoming a mathematician. Mathematicians are found in every STEM field under fascinating job titles like Nanotechnologist, Particle Physicist, and Nautical Engineer. But for most students, these career paths are foreign.
Nearly 90% of my students are black or brown, and I wish to introduce them to some of the world’s greatest mathematicians who look just like my students, with classroom walls adorned with their pictures, biographies, careers, and accomplishments, along with inspirational quotes, positive affirmations, and growth mindset vocabulary, so my students can learn that they, too can become ANYTHING they want to become.
Some very creative colleagues have produced amazing collections of posters that are available on Teachers Pay Teachers. Among the poster sets are biographies of over 200 men and women of African, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic heritage who have become scientists, engineers, inventors, and other variations of mathematicians. There is also a display that mimics the periodic table with elements replaced with STEM professions, as well as variations of timelines of notable events in the mathematics realm.
The supplies, such as the TPT gift cards I am requesting will allow me to purchase these materials from TPT, print them on various colors of card stock using a color printer, then laminate them to preserve the longevity of these materials to be displayed year after year. My wish is for my students to learn that a mathematician can be found by looking in a mirror.
