My Students

Montessori classrooms are very different from traditional classrooms. My students learn quickly to be independent learners. We work in different areas throughout the classroom. We do not have assigned seats because movement is healthy and important for children. Some students choose to work at tables and others like to work on the floor. My class is a combined 1st, 2nd, 3rd-grade classroom. I have a culturally diverse group of students who enjoy reading and learning. Thank you for helping us enrich our environment.

I love my Montessori classroom and the healthy independence it gives my students. Thank you for helping us bring valuable learning tools to my students.

My Project

As soon as I started teaching in my new classroom this year, I knew that I have to work on creating a love of reading amongst my students. My first step was bringing some of my children's Graphic Novels and Comic Books to class. And just like that... BAM!

Every time I turn around I see a student reading a Graphic Novel or a Comic Book, especially those students who have already made it clear to me that they don't read books!

Reading Graphic Novels and Comic Books allows children to comprehend a story using pictures and words. A contemporary skill that children need today with the wide use of screens at all ages. Typically, a child zooms through the Graphic Novel or Comic Book in the first time they read it. However, they always go back and read the book over and over again, they find out details, capture main ideas, study the characters and the settings, and many other details about the story, it is a bridge to reading.

Adding the Toon books kit to our classroom library will provide my students with high quality Comic Books, and a variety of stories to read and choose from, and help them engage in reading.
