Yearbook Photojournalism: Help Us Get a DSLR Camera!
Help me give my students a new digital camera!
As part of the yearbook curriculum, students learn about photojournalism and receive an introduction to digital photography. This camera will enhance their hands-on learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need an additional camera for the yearbook class. We have one digital camera for use with the yearbook class, which at times limits our ability to document more than one event. Our school often has multiple events, including academic, extracurricular, and athletics, taking place at the same time. If the camera is in use, students use their cell phone cameras, which limits photo variety/quality.
Our students are motivated, creative, and dedicated to their school and projects!
Our school has 11 CTE programs, the most of any high school in the city. My students are in various CTE programs, which makes for an even better contribution to class discussions and projects. They are energetic, and have definitive college and/or career goals.
My Project
As part of the yearbook curriculum, students learn about photo journalism and receive an introduction to digital photography. They learn vocabulary, and what makes a great storytelling photograph. My yearbook students are responsible for taking pictures of all aspects of our school. This includes clubs, academic events, athletic events, and classroom activities. By only using the camera on their phone, they are limited in the ways they can apply what they have learned about photo journalism.
Great pictures are a combination of the photographer and the technology used!
For the yearbook, we design and layout 128 pages for publication. In order to do that, we need many pictures (thousands!) in order to be able to select the perfect ones to tell the story of the year.
Please help my students expand their knowledge and experience by donating so that we can have a camera to share for the class. The reach of this project is not just limited to the students in the class; it will benefit all of the students in not only the senior class (about 200) but also all the students in the school (about 1100) because this technology will last for many years to come.
