Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are having to use old copies of The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson that are being held together with rubber bands!
My students are migrant and low income Hispanic students.
Many are new to the country and feel "lost" academically and socially. They are highly motivated, eager, and generous to a fault. They strive daily to be better students and citizens. To know them is a gift.
My Project
My students need 35 copies of The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson for our upcoming Chinese New Year unit. We read The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson for many reasons. The first and foremost is to provide insight into the Chinese culture. In addition, it provides perspective on life in America and China in the late 1940's. The book is an excellent opener for discovering baseball as our national pastime. Finally, and most powerfully, through the main character, students can relate to the struggles of learning a new language, making friends in a new school, and the importance and power of tolerance.
It is vital that students have literature that students can connect with.
This builds life long learners and readers. The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson continues, after many years, to be the book that former students consistently refer back to with fondness and empathy.
