My Students

Logic will get you from point A to Point B. Imagination will take you everywhere...Albert Einstein. Did you know that struggling readers are often great story tellers? Words may be difficult, but for them images are powerful! Through photography, my students will use images to create books.

I am fortunate to teach in an area where students are unsung heroes.

The average student is able to enjoy "being a kid"; however, my students think mostly of survival as the people in their community struggle with social ills associated with poverty, high-crime, gang-infestation, illiteracy and homelessness. Nevertheless, my students beat the odds and attend school to find solace in a nurturing and academic-focused environment. In addition to regular school attendance, my students are high achievers and take pride in their learning. They are well-aware that education can change their living conditions. More than 98% of our students receive free lunch and many parents rely on government "once-a-month stable" income to support their families. Nevertheless, the families as well as the teachers still "DREAM BIG" for our youth! Despite residing in neglected neighborhoods, my students strive to achieve and given the right technical tools, they are able to walk down the pipeline of success!

My Project

I envision my students connecting the art created by them through photography to the text at their reading ability. I would like to see my students develop digital literacy skills that will transfer to visual literacy skills- navigating books and in the creation of their very own stories. The resources selected, a Nikon Digital Camera Nikon with accessories (lens, tripod, media card) will be used for students to take snapshots of their world and use their visual learning style to not only learn how to read images, but create literary pieces. The Protection Plan is to ensure the camera's safety as it will be used by multiple students. The Cannon Ink included photo paper as a bonus, will be used to print pictures from high-quality photos taken by students. I have already purchased a Cannon printer and blank mini-books so that students can create and publish their very own artistic work..

"The arts are an essential part of every child's education.

In order for young people to be competitive academically and in the 21st century work force, they must have critical and creative thinking skills & these skills are nurtured and advanced by the arts" is a profound statement from a previous donor. It supports the fact that art (photography and digital skills) helps visual learners navigate not only text, but the world!
